Immunity, Letting Go, and The Metal Element In Chinese Medicine

In Traditional Chinese Medicine the lung and large intestine organs are associated with the Metal Element which represents letting go. The lungs breathe in fresh air and breathe out to release what no longer serves us. Similarly, the large intestine extracts nutrients and releases waste that is no longer needed in our body.

When we need to emotionally release control of outcomes and attachments or we may suffer from lung pathologies such as asthma, cough, skin, or immune system problems. We also may suffer from large intestine issues such as constipation.

Excess sadness or grief can weaken the lungs. Often when someone passes away immunity can decrease triggering a cough. Sometimes we need to let go of a relationship, job, or a belief we hold about ourself.

If you or someone you know is having trouble with any of the above, your acupuncturist may recommend the following:

  • Eating more warm cooked foods. The ingredients are easier to digest and the watery medium nurtures fluids in the body
  • Having pears especially boiling them nourishes the lungs especially when there is a dryness component
  • Local honey for allergies or Manuka Honey for antiviral properties
  • If mucus is present cooking with onion, garlic, turnip, ginger, seaweed, fenugreek, or horseradish may help disperse the mucus
  • Chinese and Ayurvedic herbs work very well to ease constipation
  • Getting Acupuncture of course :-). Acupuncture can unblock emotions and pathways helping one move forward in their process of letting go. It also simulates calming chemicals in the body so that when emotions come up we are less reactive and have a more clear mind. If someone is needle sensitive, we also offer acupressure which is massage along the specific acupuncture points and meridians. This is great especially for kids who are hesitant to try acupuncture.
